Our History

Soli Deo Gloria

For His Glory Alone!

The School’s Beginning

Agape Christian School began with the dream of two couples: Troy and Cecile Albury and Kevin and Kathy Sawyer. They felt an urgent need to offer sound Christian education based on Biblical teaching to the young people of Abaco, Bahamas. After receiving approval from the church leadership and then the church members, they worked together with the church leaders and many of the members to open in September, 1994, with kindergarten, and first, third and fourth grades taught by three teachers, Cecile Albury, Sarah Ann Weatherford, and Kathy Sawyer. Each year after that, they added a grade and employed additional teachers until they had their first graduation in 2003. Since the opening day in September, 1994, many young people have passed through its doors.

Our Focus

The focus of the school has been to lead young people to Christ, to ground them in God’s word, and to train them to serve Him in whatever vocation they choose to enter. God has been so gracious to Agape Christian School with the way He has provided for each step of the way: for the teachers and staff needed each year; for the supplies needed to operate a school; and for the building program as additional buildings were needed. The last building to be built was Grace Gym. It houses a full-sized basketball court and two volleyball courts, as well as seven classrooms to service grades 7-12. God has used that gym for many ministries besides just the school. The leadership of the school has tried to use the school as an outreach to the community through a variety of programs: Christmas and Easter programs, sports events, college fairs, and career fairs, among others. It has been their desire to develop relationships through which the Word of God can be shared.

Hurricane Dorian

It was heartbreaking when hurricane Dorian tore through Abaco on September 1, 2019, and caused such major damage to many of the buildings. It was so difficult for the teachers to realize they would not be able to teach their students. And it was difficult for so many of the students to realize they would not be able to attend Agape for this school year, especially the graduating class. Some of them had been going to Agape since they entered K-3.

However, we have to trust God that He is in control of all things. We know hurricane Dorian did not take Him by surprise and that He has a purpose and a plan. We are so grateful for the many people that have donated both their money and their time to make repairs to the school. There have been many, many people diligently working toward the goal of reopening Agape Christian School this year. We praise God for His faithfulness in seeing us through the rebuilding and repair phase. We are also grateful to all who have prayed and shared our story. Through it all we will say, “FOR THE GLORY OF GOD ALONE!”
